2022 A Call for Peace

We join the global movement in creating art in solidarity for those affected by the war in Ukraine.

Although the war in Ukraine weighs heavily on us all, our capacity for unity, compassion and love is palpable. There is perhaps no better testament to this fact than the countless people who are coming together and working towards creation rather than destruction.

Peace, Love, and Hope

Digital

When I consider the conflict in the Ukraine and the state of the world, my first thoughts are for peace, love, and of course hope. These three things if applied by all would make the world a utopia, and a harmonious existence to cherish each and every day. From that time forward….as far as my participation in this project, this group affords me the opportunity to collaborate with like minded creatives whose work I admire and respect. So often we design in a bubble, and to have this shared experience is one I look forward to each and every project. So to all I wish you Peace, Love, and Hope!!!

Make Love Not War

Colored pencils

My Square Artwork is inspired by the works of artist Keith Haring. I wanted to pair an image of anti-war with one of love and community. Haring was devoted to public works that carried strong social messages. In combining his imagery in this medium I’m hoping to portray a message of Love and Peace.

All eyes are on You.

Ink pen

I have a lot of Ukrainian friends and I wanted to support them. The yellow sections of my art are filled with white dots that are meant to be eyes because I feel like the eyes of the world are on Ukraine in this pivotal moment in their history.

Symbols for Peace: Nsibidi (Igbo) and Celtic (Irish)

Digital

I was adopted at birth & just recently discovered that I am Nigerian & Irish mostly. So I have been trying to learn more about these two places recently. I learned that there is a written language that existed before colonialism in Nigeria called Nsibidi. Turns out I am late to this knowledge, for example, Jean-Michel Basquiat used Nsibidi in his work. Most of the symbols in my tile are from this language. The symbols I added here vary in meaning from peace, strength, beauty, love, life, water, home, moon & so on. When one reads the Nsibidi stories they are seen as a whole. The symbols can be read in every direction. The Celtic symbol I chose is the Triskele (three connected swirls) which is an ancient symbol for many combinations of three but I am using it as a reference for the mind, body & spirit. The strength of the Ukrainian people seems to be in the love for each other & in their mindset & resilience of their bodies & spirit. I thought it would be interesting to bring symbols from Nigeria and Ireland together in one piece to show my support and hope for peace.

Only Love Will Remain

Oil paint

“Only Love Will Remain” A poem by the artist read by Anna Velykova from Ukraine.

Only Love Will Remain

Tyrant
You may have taken away
My house
My flowers on my head
My family

But you may not take away
My spirit
My love for my country
My love for humanity

I am yellow and blue
Indelible on my skin
My eyes fixed on the light
In the midst of sorrow

Tyrant
I am my mother’s daughter
And my grandmother’s granddaughter
I am descended from the great mother
We will all hold you at our bosom
Until your hate melts away
By your newfound tears

The seeds that I planted
Will grow from our intermingled ashes and tears

A new world will grow
And only love will remain

Pace

Mixed media

I wanted to express the message that peace is needed globally, that we are all linked and one. The name “pace” comes from a peace pilgrimage I made with a group of seminary students, we walked from Assisi to Rome. The writing you see in this piece is the word, peace, written in many languages. All beautiful in their own ways, just like each of us are. Also you’ll notice that all are done in lowercase, as peace is not more important in one place, more than another, because when one is hurting, all are hurting.

Moments of being

Mixed media

Recognizing those moments of existence are so important. Life is fleeting and unpredictable. This pieces reminds me and hopefully others to appreciate those moments to sit and write, draw, read a book, listen to a favorite or new song, hold the ones you love, appreciate the newness of life or just be still in the breath of a new or setting sun. I’ve always found (no name) Art Group projects a meaningful and fulfilling opportunity to use my love for art. I enjoy rendering using traditional methods but as of late have been combining traditional and digital. Happy to be a part of this project!

Crayons, markers and highlighters

This particular project was challenging for me due to the monochromatic tone. We decided to use different instruments that produce various hues of yellow.

Flowers of warmth

Mixed media technique with textile flower pattern, watercolour and washi tape.

I choose flowers as it is the motif that I associate the most with yellow colour, sun/warm weather and hope.

Sunflower, bees, and butterflies

Acrylic on canvas with painted paper collage

I chose the sunflower image, as it is a symbol of Ukraine, growing tall and showing strength in the warm sun. The bees represent the people of Ukraine working together diligently for their homeland. The butterflies not only show beauty, but also hope, freedom, peace, and resilience. Butterflies endure an amazing and arduous journey during their migration, similarly each individual faces daily challenges and must go along the journey they are meant to take, Sending prayers of peace, love, and strength to the people of Ukraine.

Hope

Acrylic

I decided to simply bring to life the face of the dove….., reaching out, extending the olive branch, to spread the word of peace…and HOPE that we can collectively achieve the dream, the goal for peace that we all share.

Iso dream

During covid in lockdown – I started painting landscapes that I dreamed of going to. They usually involved lagoons, sculptured trees and rocks. A place of peace. I thought it would be a perfect fit for a peace project.

Honey and sky

Mixed media

I wanted to combine both structure and free-flowing colors with watercolors, as well as black and white ink. There have been lots of beautiful sunflowers painted for Ukraine recently, so I chose to focus on the yellow bees that accompany them.

Reaching for Peace

Acrylic

I feel that art can evoke more emotion than words alone. I wanted to create something showing how we are all capable of peace – we just need to come together to make it happen. And that even in the darkest of times, bright flowers pop up to remind us that we are capable.

Peace Carrier
Acrylic

I was drawn to this project because I believe that through creative collaboration and community building, we can find solutions that bring peace. Nature is a constant source of inspiration and well-being for me, so I chose the image of a soaring bird with the aim of inspiring feelings of hope in those affected by the war.

Vision

Acrylic

The collaborative project was a special opportunity to join in with other artists to create something positive in support of Ukraine. When I viewed my square for the first time, the shape reminded me of a side view of a face, an eye, vision of unity and peace.. I began the project with thumbnail sketches playing with color and shapes before deciding on the image. Final art was created using acrylic paint on watercolor paper.

Each Other

Ink and oil pastels / digital composite

Figures drawn very intuitively and imperfectly symbolizes uncertainty and a sense of displacement. Not looking alike illustrates our capacity to reach out and take care of each other, welcoming ‘the stranger’ into our midst. I want to participate in this project to add my support to Ukraine during these very challenging times.

PEACE more than just a word in any language

Mixed media

Watercolor, ink, gouache, block print.. a base layer of watercolor wash. Ink lettering of the word peace in 100 different languages with interspersed quotes about peace becomes a texture layer. The Peace symbol is a wash and the dove is a carved block print using gouache.

I am hopeful that the more positive energy we put out will help dilute, offset the evil that men do. I am hopeful that the people of the Ukraine can find strength to endure knowing there are others who keep them in heart and mind. We can send a vibration out to the world as a whole as well that is a healing peace. It is certainly needed.

Grow in Peace

Acrylic

I am continually inspired by nature and find it brings peace to my body and calm to my anxious mind. Doodling flowers and shapes is meditative and peaceful for me as well. I wish that peace and calm would be experienced by all people at all times, and especially in times of conflict.

As the Linden Grows

Acrylic

Inspired by the ancient Linden tree in Kyiv. My painting shows a Spirit of strength and resilience, dancing and singing at the base of the tree, honoring its timeless wisdom. The tree, like us, gathers strength from its roots, its DNA, and also from a source outside itself. This source represented by the sun – faith, spirituality, community, patriotism and humanity. I used an Intentional Creativity method to create the underpainting. Words of intention are layered with washes and prayer dots, lines and patterns of love and hope. The tree and Spirit appeared to me from shapes and forms that arose. They were not planned initially but came from the intention through the process.

Sunflowers and Saint Javelin

Mixed Media

Sunflowers are the national flower of Ukraine. Sunflowers and Saint Javelin (a Madonna figure holding a portable missile) have become symbols of resistance during the Russo-Ukrainian war. There is the now famous story of a brave woman lambasting a Russian soldier occupying Ukraine; she asked the soldier what they were doing there with all of those guns and told him to put sunflower seeds in his pockets…. The Saint Javelin/Madonna figure cradling a missile reminded me of the “Flower Power” image of hippies placing flowers in guns during a protest to end the war in Vietnam. This piece is meant to remark on history repeating itself.
