We’re placing rock art around the world in hopes to brighten up someone’s day!
Inspired by…
Making art for arts sake, random acts of kindness, Tibetan sand mandalas, Zen stones, the art of letting go, the joy of giving, sidewalk and street art, subway/station art. In a world that has become overwhelmingly digital, we we want to create art that we can touch and feel! The artwork is 3-dimensional and nature is the canvas. It’s also a ZERO WASTE exhibition!
Guidelines
All ages and skill levels welcome. You design/decorate your rock anyway you like! But keep in mind this stone is NOT for you! This is about a random act of kindness. It’s a stranger that will see it and pick it up. So what’s the message you’d like to put out in the world? When your rock is finished, snap a picture, and then put your “gift” out in the world. We suggest somewhere in a public place – a park, subway, outside a supermarket, a parking meter, etc. The idea is that someone you don’t know finds it. Snap one more picture of your stone “in location”.
On the bottom of each stone there will be our website. If someone finds your stone, they’ll be able to track where this little “gift” came from! The website will host all stone photos/locations and the artist name (unless you prefer to be anonymous, even more power to you!). There will also be a contact form on our website if a “finder” wants to be known as well.
For rocks to be included in our online gallery, they must meet all requirements. Be sure to read all the guidelines carefully below before your begin.

Order A Rock!
We can send you a smooth white Caribbean egg rock for a $10 donation. Please allow 1-2 weeks for delivery. (currently unavailable)
Use Your Own Rock!
If you are using your own rock, the bottom should read this exactly. Please use waterproof ink or a sharpie, and write clearly!

Prepare Your Rock
Clean your rock, wash it off with warm water and soap and pat it dry. You could even scrub it with an old toothbrush. Rocks that were delivered have already been thoroughly rinsed 🙂
Techniques
There are endless ideas and techniques you can use, here are some popular ones. Keep in mind we would like this to be an earth friendly project! If/when possible, please use safe and non-toxic materials.

Acrylic Paints
All kinds of craft, water-based, or acrylic paints work well for rocks. If your rocks will be living outside, you can use patio paint or outdoor-friendly paint. Before painting you may want to consider “priming” your rock. For more about priming and preparation, click here >

Fine Point Markers
Markers, like ‘sharpies’, are great for adding details that can be tricky to do with brushes, especially on smaller stones.
Another option is marker paints. These are perfect if you like the control of a marker but the look of a paint.

Crayons/Tempera
A great idea for kids – instead of paint, heat up stones and paint them with crayons. Watching colorful wax melt? Fabulous! If you’re painting with very young children, tempera paint is a good option because it washes out much easier (though the colors aren’t as bright)

Decoupage
A few artists have mentioned this media, I say go for it! Here are a few tutorials, although I’m sure many more you can find online:
Sealers
Based on some research, we found that Mod Podge was the most popular good option for indoor rocks. However please note Mod Podge does not work well in warm or humid climates (it gets sticky!). For rock art that will be outdoors, Delta Ceramcoat Exterior/Interior Varnish was highly recommended (or if you want an extra “shine”). Both are safe and non-toxic. An option for a 100% natural alternative, try using beeswax.
TIP: We recommend you DO NOT purchase sealers from Amazon, they are known to hold stock in the warehouses and the sealers could be expired/dried or hardened.
Submit Your Rock!
Please READ ALL THE GUIDELINES before submission. You will need:
- One photo of the rock isolated*
- One photo of the rock in location
*Photo Guidelines: For the isolated rock, take a clear photo over a plain background, like a sheet of paper. But nothing busy. Give a bit of background space around the rock. Do not crop. Use the highest resolution/quality possible. Best lighting is outside on an overcast day. This is plenty of light without any harsh shadows from the sun. And remember your rock should be anonymous, no signing your work!
Our online rock gallery will to LIVE on Friday, November 25, 2016
