2019 Art Beyond Bars
Thank you to all our supporters!
Our 2019 fundraiser is now closed. Be sure to check out the “Letters of Gratitude”, words and art sent in response from those “Beyond the Bars”. If our project inspires you to make a donation, please do so below. Proceeds will help fund our future projects.
Journals
Our 2019 Art Beyond Bars project sends artwork to prisoners in a mission to offer creativity, connection, and kindness to those disconnected from society. Our artists designed these covers to encourage prisoners to draw/write and use these as journals for creative outlets.
Journals sent to prisons had many restrictions. Notebooks must be perfect bound, not stapled or sewn. Only colored pencils and ink pens were the permitted medium. The journals were sent to inside members of Black and Pink in New York, one of the few states that still allow prisoners to receive packages. Special thanks to Beech Tree Paper for providing these earth-friendly notebooks at a generous discount.
“It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones.” – Nelson Mandela
“A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.”― Steve Maraboli
“Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change.” —Bob Kerrey
When requested, art supplies were also provided in the package such as crayons, colored pencils, charcoal pencils and felt tip pens. Special thank you all our artists who donated their time and talent into the journal covers.
Postcards
For most prisoners, only postcards or letters may be received. Names/addresses of prisoners who identified as artists were provided by The Justice Arts Coalition. Thank you to all the below artists who gave (no name) Art Group copyright permission to reproduce and send an image of their art. Each postcard was handwritten with a note of kindness and encouragement.
What you are doing is a tremendous service to the inmates and those who have been released. You give them some hope that they won’t be forgotten, that they can be recognized for the amazing work that they do and that when they get out they can continue to do…Thanks for all your efforts. – Anne Stepp, mother of incarcerated artist

What a great idea and wonderful pictures. I am proud to say that I am the sister of 2 of the artists (but I don’t have the talent they do) I am SO PROUD of them! Hope they helped someone get through a bad day 🙂
Thank you, Nancy!
