Vietnam

Vietnam’s tropical forests support rich biodiversity and a precious, sensitive ecosystem. 25 million people depend on forest products for subsistence. Over-exploitation of the land has endangered many native species of plants and animals, and increased the impact of natural disasters. Indonesia

Indonesia is home to magnificent rainforests, carbon-rich peatlands, and diverse wildlife like orangutans, proboscis monkeys, Sun bears and over 1,700 species of birds. This project focuses on the Kalimantan region in Borneo, home to the Tanjung Puting National Park. In 2015, rampant fires burnt and destroyed more than 30,000 hectares of its forest. Ghana is characterized by beautiful forests, diverse animal life, and miles of sandy beaches along a picturesque coast. However, since the early 1990s, Ghana has lost more than 30% of its forests – approximately 2.5 million hectares. Planting trees here will help to restore degraded land that has been over-exploited for timber, agriculture, and mining. Guatemala has one of the most extensive and diverse forest systems in Central America. Its name is said to mean "land of the trees" in the Mayan-Toltec language. Sadly, the country is losing these precious forests at a rapid rate. Because of its topography, Guatemala is susceptible to landslides, floods and other natural disasters. However, the biggest driver of deforestation has been population growth and economic disparity. With more than one million hectares of land that could be harnessed for reforestation, this project aims to bring back the healthy forests that have characterized the country since ancient times. Brazil

The Atlantic Forest, also known as Mata Atlantica, once covered 130 million hectares across Brazil. Now, this tropical rainforest ecosystem is home to 70% of the country’s population. Centuries of deforestation for timber, sugar cane, coffee, cattle ranching, and urban sprawl have reduced the size of the forest by over 90%. Although the water supply for Brazil’s two most populous cities (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo) comes from this forest, there is a lack of public policies and resources to protect it. Florida is home to 37 state forests, covering over 1,070,000 acres. Healthy forests provide citizens with sustainable wood production, fresh air, wildlife habitat, clean water, enjoyable outdoor recreation and quality of life. Yet in recent years, unhealthy forests have been major contributors to Florida's disastrous wildfires and unprecedented outbreaks of southern pine beetles. But these precious forests face serious threats, including insect infestations, long-term drought, and forest fires. Unhealthy forests set the stage for exceptionally large, devastating wildfires that significantly increase risks of dangerous flooding, extreme erosion, degraded water quality and reduced water storage capacity. Oregon

Deforestation isn't just happening in well-known global hotspots like Indonesia and Brazil's rainforest. A new analysis says forests are also shrinking on state and private land in Oregon, where an estimated 522,000 acres of forest cover have disappeared since 2000.
